New CodeVenture program at BakerRipley

This summer we kicked off the CodeVenture program at different BakerRipley community centers.

At BakerRipley we’re building a community of makers. All over our communities we have young neighbors learning and creating. And to further our reach, we kicked off the CodeVenture program this summer.

Bringing fun and engaging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities to elementary and middle school campers.

“CodeVenture gives the children in our communities a chance to experience STEM in a hands-on, fun way that introduces them to new concepts they may not have encountered otherwise,” says Kelly Hurn, Fab Lab Houston Education Manager

For 8-weeks campers work on different STEM activities at their locations. During the final two weeks of the program the groups visited Fab Lab Houston in the BakerRipley East Aldine Campus.

While at the Fab Lab students designed a structure to fit over a Sphero robot, that will then be outfitted with a balloon and a pushpin.

The activities are open-ended so kids have a lot of flexibility.”Each group has the chance to come up with their own solution through the Engineering Design Process. No two projects will look exactly the same.” explains Kelly.

During their final competition on August 1st the teams will have to battle each other, trying to pop the balloons of other teams with their pushpin while trying to keep their balloon from being popped.
