Gerardo Perez is a black belt martial arts instructor who is giving back to his community in a unique way. He offers free martial arts classes at our Baker Ripley Neighborhood Center.
“There are many people who want to learn martial arts, but it’s too expensive for them,” he says.
For Gerardo, martial arts is more than just a hobby – and he wants his students to feel the same way. “Growing up, I was bullied in school so I teach my students how to avoid being a victim like I was. I want them to learn discipline, respect and be empowered. Not just now, but for life.”
He started the free program about three years ago and has dedicated more than 600 volunteer hours and taught over 125 students in the community.
